The Net Regulator Icann
Net regulator Icann, the body that oversees Internet adresses, has recently allowed the use of web
addresses that contain no Latin characters. According to Icann, they have already received 21
requests for IDNs (Internationalised Domain Names) in 11 different languages, including Chinese,
Russian, Tamil and Thai. Previously, websites could use some non-latin letters, but the country codes
such as .eg for Egypt or .ru for Russia, had to be written in Latin script (see www.Icann.org for more information).

These changes may not be visible straight away for everyone. Computers do not generally come with
the complete set of fonts to view all non-latin scripts. This can be fixed by downloading and installing
the appropriate fonts or language packages.
These new conventions are seen as a step towards representing the true diversity of languages
around the world on the web, making it a more global and accessible place for everyone. Due to the
lack of online content in Russian, Chinese and Arabic compared to the number of speakers of these
languages, we can anticipate an exponential growth in their use on the web.
While innovations in translation and search technology may help to provide answers in this area,
many businesses however, are concerned about how to maintain control over their brand and
communications, without necessarily owning the phonetic or translated equivalents in all languages.
Conclusion? Web localisation is here to stay! Eclipse Translations is able to provide the translation
and localisation of your HTML files, Java, CGI, Perl and other scripts into every major world language.
Please contact us on +44(0)1665511036 or at info@eclipse-translation.co.uk if you would like to
discuss in more detail.

Charity Fundraiser
This year's Race for Life, a 5k run/walk around Newcastle Exhibition Park, included nine highly athletic Eclipsers. The race, which took place on Sunday 12th July, was in aid of Cancer Research UK, and the Eclipse team raised over £1160, made possible by generous donations from a number of sponsors and a cake sale.
The race was not only an opportunity to raise money for an excellent cause, but also great fun and a chance to wear lots of pink and dress up like Superwoman! commented the Eclipse racing ladies' as they have become known here.
Well done to the team for raising such a fantastic total. A Cancer Research 10K race in September will be the next challenge for several Eclipse staff.

RWS Group wins Queen's Award for fourth time
It has just been announced that the RWS Group, the specialist patent and technical translation, and patent search company, with its headquarters in Gerrards Cross, Buckinghamshire, has been awarded the Queen's Award for Enterprise: International Trade 2009.
The Award will be presented by the Queen's local representative at a special ceremony in due course.

The RWS Group has been trading since 1982 and is the UK market leader in its field, employing 465 staff worldwide. Approximately 70% of its business is translating patents. The balance comes from technical translation and localisation services to the engineering, electronics, pharmaceutical, chemical, legal and financial industries, and from patent searches and PatBase an online patent database.

RWS employs over 100 translators and patent searchers whose first degree is in the sciences.
The Group also has offices in France, Switzerland, Germany, Japan, China and the USA.
Commenting upon achieving the award Andrew Brode, RWS Group Chairman said:

a 1-year contract to Eclipse Translations Limited for the
provision of translation services into English, French and
German.
The Consumer Authority in the Netherlands is a newlyconstituted
body that is responsible for the supervision

the Authority was given the power to take action in

department of the Ministry of Economic Affairs.
The mission of the Consumer Authority in the Netherlands
is 'to promote fair trade between businesses and consumers,
based on the economic interests of consumers.'
On a practical level, this mission statement can be translated
into two objectives: to reduce the number of infringements
of consumer law that take place and to improve suppliers'
and consumers' awareness of consumer laws and obligations
and of the options for achieving legal redress.
Speaking about the contract award, Mr Stuart Carter,
General Manager at Eclipse, said We are delighted to
win this contract and to be working with the Consumer

Eclipse holds translation workshop

In March, Eclipse visited the University
of Sheffield to deliver a programme that
included a general presentation about
translation as a career and working at
Eclipse, a Dutch to English translation
workshop for 4th year students of Dutch
and a presentation to M.A. students on
Trados translation memory software and
translation project management.
Lecturers and students alike found the
sessions extremely informative. The
highlight of the day for me was the interest
shown by the students and the fact that all
of the sessions spontaneously generated
such brilliant discussions on the subject of
translation, said Andrew Maycroft. On the Germanic Studies part of the visit, he also remarked
that as a graduate in Dutch myself, it was a great feeling to visit a department where Dutch
forms such a tangible presence.
As Andrew Maycroft, ITS Manager at Eclipse, explains: Dutch is not widely taught at university
level here in the UK even though it is the native language of 21 million people in the Netherlands
and Belgium. The workshops are intended to raise the awareness of translation as a career path
for graduates of Dutch and are aimed at introducing an industry perspective to their studies.
Eclipse translates approximately 5 million words of Dutch text into English each year and boasts
a large and expanding number of clients in the Netherlands. Our added value lies in the fact that
we provide Dutch to English translations that are produced and proofread in England by native
speakers of English who have an expert knowledge of Dutch. These translators also have the
added benefit of being able to consult native Dutch speaking colleagues in the project
management department. We are one of only a handful of companies to have a dedicated
in-house Dutch team staffed by native English speakers and place a great deal of importance
on developing partnerships with universities that offer Dutch.

Global Language Solutions
Eclipse Translations Ltd today announced the launch of two new web-enabled services as part of its suite of Global Language Solutions.
Following months of development and testing, Eclipse Translations Ltd, one of the leading European-based translation companies, today launched e-clipseTM and e-archiveTM to streamline its global operations and provide added value for its clients.
With clients and translators in almost every country throughout the world the company has responded to the demand for seamless worldwide web-enabled access to its workflow management tools and archive of translated materials.
Projects, most of which require coordination of several tasks undertaken in several different countries simultaneously can now be managed with ease from the Eclipse European Translations Centre on the outskirts of Alnwick, Northumberland, UK.
e-clipseTM, based on an LTC platform, provides a secure environment for clients to access the Eclipse Workflow Management System and upload documents for translation, monitor progress of all aspects of the order (for example translation, proof-reading and typesetting) and download the translated files. Translators, proof-readers and typesetters working on the project can also download files, log progress and upload completed files. The entire process is transparent for everyone in the production chain, including the client 24 hours per day, 365 days per week, irrespective of geographic location.
Also, with more than 1000 freelance translators around the world the company has always been faced with a major logistical workload in coordinating all of these resources and ensuring that personal details and availability are up-to-date. e-clipseTM empowers these freelance translators to manage their own personal data, irrespective of their location and time zone.
The e-archiveTM system provides clients with the ability to access all of the documents that Eclipse has translated for them, to perform free text searches on those documents and view or download them. This system has been developed to meet the increasing demand of multi-site and multi-national clients to ensure that staff, irrespective of location or time zone, are able to access translations, retrieve these and distribute them within their respective organisations in a rapid and secure manner. There is also a financial benefit for clients in that duplicated effort and cost is avoided. For example, a DIN (German) standard translated into English by a London office is also available to the Singapore office. Previously, both offices would have arranged for a translation using their local suppliers when in fact this was not necessary. Unfortunately, there was no solution to this problem until the development of e-archiveTM.
Eclipse has an outstanding track record of developing innovative solutions to service language-related requirements. This innovative approach, combined with an outstanding and award-winning level of professional linguistic services has helped Eclipse become No. 1 in the medical, defence and technical fields in the UK. This is reflected in the many prestigious contracts that we win and are subsequently re-awarded with government organisations and blue-chip companies throughout Europe and beyond.
The combination of these two web-enabled services is unique in our sector and shall further strengthen our leading position as the provider of professional language services to organisations that demand translations, delivered on time by the best linguists in the business, that are both technically and culturally perfect.
The pace of global change that our clients are faced with means that they need to communicate effectively and rapidly 24 hours per day in language combinations that can literally change from hour to hour. It is our task to facilitate that communication and to guarantee it both now and in the future. When you have to translate more than 12,500 words every hour of every working day, 52 weeks per year, as we do, then you can be sure that when we develop solutions such as e-clipse and e-archive we are setting the standards that others will struggle to follow.

Eclipse does it again!
Eclipse Translations Ltd today announced that on 11 August 2004 it signed a major contract with the Ministry of Defence (MoD) for the provision of secure translation services in support of British Forces Germany.
The contract will commence in April 2005 and will run until 2009. It consists of the translation of an estimated 40,000 highly technical and medical documents into and from all official languages of the EU.
The award of contract is a clear indication of the MoDs continuing confidence in the quality, accuracy and reliability of the services provided by Eclipse. These services have been provided without interruption since early 1998 during which more than 60,000 documents and 20 million words have been translated.
Eclipse employs specialist teams of linguists, doctors and engineers at its purpose-built European Translation Centre in Alnwick, Northumberland, to service medical, government and defence-related contracts.
Over the years we have continued to invest in top quality infrastructure, innovation and people. That is why we have the best, most professional team of project managers, linguists and support staff in the UK translation industry today. The quality of our service provision and the innovative global language solutions we offer have placed us at the forefront of language providers in Europe. This contract award demonstrates recognition of our track record, confidence in our current service provision and confidence in our ability to continue to deliver mission critical services under the challenging and changing conditions that British Forces are constantly being faced with.

Further MoD Recognition for Eclipse

Dr. Diane Milburn, Project Manager, Eclipse Translations with Mr. Michael Quarrell, Deputy Director Secondary Healthcare British Forces Germany, at a recent meeting in Germany when the invitation was announced.
With a track record of providing secure translation services to the Ministry of Defence for several years, Eclipse Translations Ltd is pleased to announce that it has been invited to tender as the sole supplier for a single-source translation contract for the British Forces Germany Secondary Healthcare Service (BFG SHC). Contract award is expected in mid-2004 and the service will commence in April 2005. The duration of the contract will be 4 years.
The contract involves the translation into and from all EU languages of more than 40,000 medical documents relating to British Forces Germany patients, thus enabling the seamless transfer of medical and other patient information back into the Primary Healthcare System.
This tendering opportunity is without doubt a major recognition by MoD of the quality, accuracy and reliability of our services. We have been working closely with various agencies of the MoD for several years on a wide variety of projects and have built up an outstanding track record. For example, in the last three years alone we have translated in excess of 5 million words for the MoD. This invitation also reaffirms our position as the UKs leading provider of medical translation services; services that are provided to the MoD, the NHS and numerous pharmaceutical companies.
Eclipse employs a specialist in-house team of medical translators and doctors in addition to its technical, legal and financial translators. It has a staff of 30 and has more than 1000 freelance translators, spread around the world, that work for the company. In 2001 the company built its own secure, purpose-built European Translation Centre on the outskirts of Alnwick, Northumberland, and recently acquired two of its major competitors.

On top of this the company also announced that it has won a translation contract from the Translation Directorate of the European Union in Brussels. Eclipse approaching the European Summit ........
Eclipse Translations Ltd, based in Alnwick, Northumberland, is getting closer to its goal of becoming the No. 1 translation company in Europe.
Eclipse has seen growth of 20% for each of the last five years and with yet another outstanding year behind it, Eclipse closed its books this year with 25% growth, mainly coming from its European operations. Exported services represented 77% of turnover.
During the last year Eclipse has gained further successes in its key medical, technical, legal and defence-related translation sectors and has secured additional long-term contracts from both British and foreign governments.
Just two years after moving into its purpose-built European Translation Centre in Alnwick, Eclipse has successfully completed its initial 1m expansion plan. And in a further strategic move Eclipse has today announced that it has acquired all of the share capital of The Language Service Ltd (TLS), an award winning translation company based on Teesside which specialises in servicing the translation and language training needs of the leading petrochemical and pharmaceutical companies in the UK and mainland Europe. Created from the former in-house ICI Translation Department, The Language Service has developed over the last 14 years to become a key player in Europe in these specialist fields.
The acquisition was made with the support of the Business Investors Group (BiG) based in Chester-le-Street and the Corporate Team at the law firm Ward Hadaway, based on the Quayside in Newcastle upon Tyne.
TLS is a very professional and well run company that has developed its niche markets very effectively and profitably. Its fit with Eclipse is perfect. It has a strong and experienced management team and its ability to develop at the same pace as Eclipse is proven. The prospects for both companies are outstanding.
The relentless globalisation of many of our blue-chip clients, the enlargement of the European Union and the spectacular demand for multi-lingual web-based solutions mean that our markets are continuing to develop rapidly. The quality of our professional services, delivered by the best linguists in the UK and our ability to match the pace of international developments will result in even greater opportunities for the combined operation. By the end of this year staff numbers at the Alnwick head office will rise to 30 and, in addition to the support we have from our associate companies in every EU member state and beyond, we will also be increasing our international freelance staff from 850 to more than 1000.
We have now successfully completed the initial 1m expansion plan I announced at the end of 2001. Phase 2 of the expansion, to double our turnover in the next two years through a combination of organic growth and acquisition has now been heralded with the acquisition of TLS.
We have proven that we have the right formula, we have positioned ourselves in the European market very carefully and everyone is excited about where we go to next. The atmosphere here is buzzing.
